The Korallions are loosely inspired by coral reefs. Rather than specific organisms, the guiding idea was that of an organic mass that grows slowly, layer by layer, in rhythm with water currents and the life and death of thousands of tiny living beings. The same rhythm of accumulation is revealed in the material itself. Birch plywood, arranged and bonded in dozens of layers, reveals grain patterns during carving that resemble growth lines or the flow of water. Translated into monumental scale and placed outdoors, these fantastical forms become fragments of fluid, soft life, frozen in motion. Their function as usable objects seems to arise more from a natural coincidence than from an end in itself.
Each Korallion can be regarded as the fossil of a unique specimen of another form of life, set like a precious stone or a fragment of coral. The polished, cast bases subtly suggest this idea.
